Young Knives are back with their highly anticipated new album, Landfill (out January 25th via Gadzook), and its lead single, ‘Dissolution’. The band has also announced a run of headline UK tour dates. Produced by the band in their Oxfordshire studio and mixed by Mike Lindsay of Tuung, Landfill marks a significant departure from their previous work, Barbarians. While Barbarians delved into the darker aspects of human nature, Landfill explores themes of mortality, legacy, and the impermanence of existence.
The album’s title is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the band’s journey in the music industry. Rather than dwelling on the negative connotations associated with the term, Young Knives uses it to contemplate the nature of existence and the pursuit of meaning. As frontman Henry Dartnall explains:
It’s a record about letting things go before they are taken from you, including the carefully curated images of ourselves. Embracing everything the world throws at you and not taking it to heart.
The lead single, ‘Dissolution,’ is inspired by the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy quote, ‘Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.’ Dartnall elaborates, ‘I love ideas like this. What an amazing way to present such a deep idea but also make it fun. I just wanted to experiment with doing our version of that.’
Recorded on an old tape machine, ‘Dissolution’ captures the raw and spontaneous energy of the band’s performance. The song was recorded at a time when the band was facing the end of their time in their studio, adding a layer of poignancy to the lyrics.
