The Colourblind and the Birds Soar With Debut Album ‘Baying for Blood’

The Colourblind and the Birds share the radiant and bold debut album Baying for Blood.

An introspective sonic journey into the complexities of mental health through a sprawling soundscape of angular synths, tight beats and urgent vocal delivery. Spearheaded by enigmatic London-based producer Flip X, this 15-track project is a powerful fusion of genres, brought to life by a roster of underground talent from Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Released to coincide with World Mental Health Day, the album also serves a charitable purpose, with 100% of its proceeds going to the UK mental health charity, Mind.

The mysterious Flip X, known for his past collaborations with legendary producer Martin Rushent (Human League, Buzzcocks, The Stranglers), has long been a shadowy yet influential figure in the underground music scene. Through Baying for Blood, he steps forward with a deeply personal album that captures the fragility and rawness of mental health struggles. The album’s an eclectic mix of trip-hop, alt-pop, and experimental sounds, create a rich soundscape that is as haunting as it is emotionally stirring, comparable to the likes of Depeche Mode and LCD Soundsystem.

Flip X, a reclusive multi-instrumentalist and mental health advocate, uses Baying for Blood as a platform to address his own experiences with bipolar disorder, channeling those struggles into a shared musical experience. “This album is my way of channelling the struggles of mental health into a shared creative experience. It’s about fostering a community through music—one that can help heal and express the vibrant, raw emotions that come with mental fragility” he explains.

The album showcases a stellar lineup of international collaborators, adding layers of depth and diversity to its exploration of mental health themes. Highlights include Lynn from Taiwan’s electronic group Jade Eyes, who brings a hypnotic edge to the record, alongside Riot Son from North Carolina, and London-based artists Su Goodacre, Captain OPE, and Ben Fox Smith (Serafin, Stony Sleep). Each artist contributes their own distinct style and voice, enhancing the album’s emotive and eclectic atmosphere.
