Do you ever have days when you want to shake up your playlist with an unabashed, brazen bop? Well, I’m having one of those days, and fortunately, Australian quintet, The Last AvoCado is here to turbocharge my morning (and definitely night-out routine) with their latest blend of pop, rock, ‘n’ blues! Of course, I’m talking about ‘Wild One.’
What’s so captivating about The Last AvoCado is that, despite being quite new to the scene, you wouldn’t think they were just starting out, especially when you hear ‘Wild One.’ Spirit uncorked, this track is an eruption of rebellion and recklessness, laced with a whether-you-like-it-or-not edginess that is like electricity sparking afresh.
Spearheaded by the unapologetically rich vocals of Zoe Merralls, ‘Wild One’ is one single that those who crave some liberation need to hear.
Wild One
From the off, you’re hit with a gritty, down-and-dirty guitar riff that snicks the texture of the track with an addictive sharpness. With the light timbre of the snapping drumbeats, the instrumental harmonies are as smooth as black barrel whiskey. Specifically, there is both a spiced silkiness within the interplay between the guitars and drums and a confident char to every note that creates a mellifluous medley of gilding and gravel.
I also love the little sighs scattered around the initial instrumentation. I can totally envision Zoe Merralls taking a swig of her drink, storming up to the stage, and making her vocal delivery seem like an effortless breeze. Speaking of that vocal delivery, Merralls’s voice is a smokehouse of intoxicating allure, authenticity, and depth. Her vocals complement the raw, confessional qualities of the lyrics wonderfully; Merralls’s bite is teeming with an unrestrained attitude, which makes you want to embrace all of the wild things you did in your past.
This track sports a flavour of The Last AvoCado that suits their signature sound so well. It takes the thunderous rhythms you’ll come to expect from the group after listening to ‘Fyi’ and ‘Miss Fortune,’ and takes it up another notch. For me, this extra ‘notch’ makes it so that the track celebrates the gorgeously husky sound of the American rock band Dorothy and the fiery swagger of legendary blues singer Big Mama Thornton. In other words, this single simply oozes firepower.
And don’t get me started on that instrumental break. When those guitar licks take centre stage, every note plays as if dipped in an acid bath, and no one is safe from its venomous spindrifts. With the subtle, snapping drumbeats, the rumbling bass, and Merralls’s sultry sighs, the instrumental break alone is more than enough to get you moving.
Unsurprisingly, the race to the blazing diminuendo is studded with the striking flirtation between Merralls’s vocals and the insane instrumental harmonies. It’s this flirtation that sends you hurtling toward the abrupt final note, which is paired appropriately with one last isolated, kittenish sigh.
All in all, ‘Wild One’ is a burning barn of high-energy chaos and masterful control, a track that strikes the perfect balance between raw power and precision.

The Last AvoCado
Without a shadow of a doubt, The Last AvoCado is a band that gets people out of their seats and ready to dance till the dawn. Having wowed crowds at the Gidgestock Music Festival, Blossom Festival, and the Honky Tonk Blues Bar, this carefree quintet is making it abundantly clear that they are a powerhouse of unshakeable energy and talent.
With The Last AvoCado’s YouTube channel acting as a galvanic grotto, jam-packed with vivacious live performances, I’m confident that the group has the steam to go the distance.
‘Wild One’ is available on major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer.
Till next time.
