How many songs can you name that smear an alluringly wicked streak of electronic production over the rich, extensive history of dark divine femininity? Well, I know of one that you’ll want to hear for yourself: Mama Blue’s ‘Magissa.’ Produced and polished by Prodbydavii at Black Siren Studios, Mama Blue’s latest single offers a true experience of empowerment. ‘How?’ you might be wondering.
‘Magissa,’ a track that is beautifully performed entirely in Greek, is a bridge upon which the power of womanhood and the depths of ancestral connection meet. Specifically, this song found its inspiration in Mama Blue’s heritage and the legendary witches of the East, and for that reason, it is more than just another release; it’s a gift meant for all the ‘witches, goddesses, and powerful femmes out there.’ Let’s unwrap this one together, shall we?
Magissa
Straight off the bat, the melody ensnares your ears, flaunting blade-sharp, pulsing beats and some infernal, whispery vocals. From the atmosphere of the intro alone, it feels like you are being summoned into a deity’s dark lair, a place where shadows scurry across the walls and danger creeps around every corner.
Then, rising from the rhythm, Mama Blue’s siren-like voice makes its first appearance, shooting up the slopes of a high-pitched spike, accompanied by distorted effects that give her vocals a distinctly inhumane edge. The marriage between her mesmeric voice and the sorcery-sputtering beats imbues the texture of the track with a playful darkness that leaves you thinking how thrilling it would be to hear it performed on stage. Put simply, this song is begging to be unleashed upon a laser-lit crowd.
I also love that Mama Blue sings every word in her mother tongue. It’s no secret that Greek is such a beautiful language, one that is teeming with fluid, mellifluous sounds and expressive contours. These sounds and contours add a degree of serpentine silkiness to Mama Blue’s performance, which in turn, reinforces the bewitching power that ‘Magissa’ wears so well. Not only that, but because the song is performed in Greek, you can hear the authentic love that Mama Blue has for her roots upon every note. What a way to honour her ancestor’s legacy!
One point in the song that particularly caught my ear was when the instrumentals come to a sudden halt, and all you hear is the breathy vocals and the subtle mist of resonance that lingers around it. Before too long, the melody rebuilds itself, inspiring the evocative image of a woman reborn—exactly what Mama Blue wanted every woman to envision when listening to ‘Magissa.’
Slithering towards the track’s sultry close, you will be, once more, carried toward the spellbound silence on a wave of whispers as delicate as breath on glass. The pulses that reeled you into the song’s intro will be the beats that abruptly wake you up from this dark dream, ending with a slice-swift standstill that leaves you completely hypnotised and wanting more.

Mama Blue
Taking a peek behind the veil, you’ll find that Mama Blue is the musical project of Kate, an Athens-born artist who has always had an affinity for alternative music. That said, music that exists beyond the fringes of mainstream culture isn’t the only thing that Mama Blue has a deep connection with.
Having roots in Asia Minor, Mama Blue soon realised that the culture of her ancestors opened a door to a world of mythical legends and soul-stirring nostalgia. Impassioned by the spirits of her grandmothers, the witches of Smyrna, Mama Blue uncovered a powerful purpose: to honour their legacy with her unabashedly convention-defying music.
From then on, Mama Blue shared the fruits of her sonic spellcraft, including her 2019 single ‘Salem’ and her 2024 album ‘Cvlt Leader.’ Over the past six years, the evolution of her style is not the only apparent thing; her ability to lure listeners into her dreamscape of electronic hypnotism is also very evident. After all, ‘Magissa’ has been out for less than a month, and already, it has over 2.4K streams on Spotify. In other words, the only direction Mama Blue can go is up.
While it’s unclear what Mama Blue has planned for the future, I can say that since she hopes that ‘all the beautiful little witches around the world’ enjoy and connect with her unique sound, it seems like a lot more will come our way soon. In the meantime, you know what to do.
‘Magissa’ is available to listen to across all major streaming platforms!
Till next time!
