Amortentia – “Rainstorm”

The gorgeous “Rainstorm” crafts a dreamy and inviting sound that feels like, and is inspired by, taking “shelter from the rain.” The track marks the striking debut of Australian artist Amortentia, a 23-year-old crafting dreamy psych-pop from home. Haunting vocals and lush acoustics set the stage, the subsequent chorus conveying a title-referencing hypnotic yearning, reminiscent of The War on Drugs’ most understated material. The mellow key accompaniment and lush acoustical backbone converge with the dreamy vocals for a rainy-day serenity, commencing a lovely twist with the “when the party’s over,” bridge. Understated while still rousing with atmosphere and melody, “Rainstorm” is a fantastic debut from Amortentia.

“I was up on Melbourne’s Mount Dandenong and saw on the radar that a heavy storm was coming,” Tim (Amortentia) says. “My girlfriend and I drove down the mountain and huddled in our car for shelter. We could see the city lights in the distance and the sheets of rain covering the suburbs. It was such a cozy and intimate experience, the song’s title just struck me in the moment and I wrote it the next day.”

“Rainstorm” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of October 2021’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Dream-Pop.
