Josh Lumsden Speaks on Music Video for Single “SEROTONIN” and More!

NYC based artist Josh Lumsden speaks with us on their latest single “SEROTONIN,” the creation of the music video, and more!

Independent DIY pop artist and acclaimed NYC-based producer Josh Lumsden recently released their latest new and music video titled “SEROTONIN” on March 1st, and it’s definitely a banger. The release marks the second single of Lumsden’s sophomore EP, ‘VYYPER’, slated for a 2024 release.

“SEROTONIN” features full production by Josh Lumsden independently, pivoting to a more dance-funk sound blended with powerhouse belts. It’s very clear that this combination of self-production on the instrumental and clever songwriting skills in the lyrics make for an ear worm of a song that’s hard to get out of your head.

After my first listen, I was completely enamored by the beautiful soundscape Josh created on the instrumental. Once Josh’s vocals came in, I felt like I was floating just listening to the beautiful melodies they sing. As the song progressed, it only got better and better. The hook is unbelievably catchy and fun, I fell in love with the track instantly. Josh’s voice sounds like it was sent straight from heaven, truly. This song is honestly such a bop that it should be on everyone’s playlist.

The video itself is captivating from start to finish too. It features Lumsden as two separate entities – an anxious capturer, and a detained creature of hybrid physiology. Dragonflies consistently reappear in different parts of the video, serving as a recurring visual motif that ties the scenes together. At one point, Josh has hooks in their back which delivers a bit of a shock factor and intrigue that draws you in. The video is quite an impressive feat as they themself are credited as the director and editor of the project. I found myself watching this video several times over the last few weeks because the visuals capture so much of the energy found in the song itself. Beautiful, ethereal, captivating, and stunning. It’s a must watch!

Check out my interview with Josh below!

Bryce Quartz: Hey Josh, thank you for taking the time to speak with me today! How are you feeling now that your single “SEROTONIN” is out now along with the music video?

Josh Lumsden: Thank you so much for having me! I feel great, it’s always good to finally be able to share the projects that you’ve worked on for a while. It’s almost kind of a relief in a way.

Bryce Quartz: The single is a total bop, just like the rest of your discography! How did you go about creating this song?

Josh Lumsden: Thank you! I actually one day was googling “natural serotonin boosters” HAHA & thought “that would make a good song title”, so I started writing. When maki my the beat, I’ve been very inspired by artists lately who are blending dance with funk like KAYTRANADA, so that’s were the producing inspiration came from.

Bryce Quartz: It’s the second single off your upcoming EP VYYPER, with the first single being “OH MY GOD,” which is a total banger. Can you tell us a little bit about your creative direction for this upcoming EP?

Josh Lumsden: Yeah! Although the tracks on VYYPER seem to be a family full of misfits, the visuals have more of a connected motif. Essentially, the EP explores what I call “Project: VYYPER”, which is an experimental, supernatural idea of half-human, half animal mutations. These ideas really come to life in the visuals for the EP.

Bryce Quartz: I really want to give you props for this music video, it’s so cleverly edited and the moment we got to see hooks in your back? I was gagged! Can you tell us a little bit about your creative process in coming up with the concept for this music video?

Josh Lumsden: Thank you!! Yeah, I had an idea to be an dragonfly-“entity” that was in the image of its capturer. I wanted to be, like, in a cage, but make it more “slay” haha. So I decided to be pierced with hooks.

Bryce Quartz: If there is one thing you’d want listeners to take away from this song and music video, what would that be and why?

Josh Lumsden: With all of my projects, I want people to know that it is authentically all me. Love it or hate it, you’re getting 100% me. From producing the music to editing the video alone. If it sucks I have no one to blame except me!

Bryce Quartz: For first time Josh Lumsden listeners, what three tracks would you suggest from your discography and why?

Josh Lumsden: SEROTONIN, Energy (ft. Yvie Oddly), and Drowning (ft. Brendan Maclean) are some of my personal favs that I think would give people a good idea of my music!

Bryce Quartz: Can you give us any exclusive hints or information on your upcoming EP? What can we expect next from you?

Josh Lumsden: Yes, the next singles coming will be some iconic collaborations that I cannot wait to finally share!! And expect more visuals too!

Bryce Quartz: Anything else you’d like to add for our readers?

Josh Lumsden: I hope anyone who discovers my music & videos at least are entertained! I am very grateful to everyone who enjoys it & won’t stop any time soon.

Bryce Quartz: Thanks for taking the time to speak with me today, Josh!

Josh Lumsden: Thank you for having me!
