Squid have released “Cro-Magnon Man,” the final single from their upcoming album Cowards, which drops this Friday, February 7th, via Warp Records.

“Cro-Magnon Man” explores a world where meaningless objects outlast humanity. The track features vocals from guitarist Louis Borlase, alongside Clarissa Connelly, Tony Njoku, and Rosa Brook, set against a backdrop of glitching synths, guitars, and a heavy, subterranean bassline.

The single follows previously released tracks “Crispy Skin” (described by The FADER as “a surprisingly breezy song about cannibalism and moral cowardice”) and “Building 650” (a song about loneliness and isolation, even in a crowd). Both previous singles have received airplay on BBC Radio 6.

Squid’s new album, Cowards, delves into the nature of evil. Comprised of nine distinct narratives, the songs on Cowards are infused with a dark, almost vantablack humour, exploring themes of apophenia. The album is a rich tapestry of layers and harmonies, blending digital soundscapes with acoustic grandeur and experimental tones, achieved by pushing instruments beyond their traditional boundaries. Throughout their third album, Squid—Louis Borlase, Ollie Judge, Arthur Leadbetter, Laurie Nankivell, and Anton Pearson—explore a diverse range of influences, from folk and kosmische to psychedelia, jazz, and electronics.
