“We shall overcome.” It’s a timeless message that can’t be said enough to remind people of their inherent power to be changemakers in an ever-changing world still shackled by oppression, and female rock quartet Skip the Needle says it again and again in style on their latest single “Until We Overcome.”
The Oakland-based band kicked off February with the release that harkens back to the glory days of rock n roll, when crunchy guitars, soaring solos and vivacious vocals reigned supreme on the radio waves. These days, many artists have traded their instruments for software plugins, but Vicki Randle (bass/vocals), Katie Cash (guitar/vocals), Shelley Doty (guitar/vocals) and Kofy Brown (drums/vocals) rock on the good ol’ fashioned way, singing loud and proud an optimistic battle cry that every generation needs to hear: “We’re just down here trying to talk to you / you may think it doesn’t matter what you choose / we need to fight to let the light shine through / there’s nothing in this world that we can’t do.”
The musicianship is impeccable on the track, but it’s no surprise given that lead singer Randle is a music industry veteran who spent 20 years as a percussionist and vocalist with Branford Marsalis‘ band on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and has been a backing vocalist for iconic R&B gospel singer Mavis Staples. Don’t just give “Until We Overcome” a spin, please, heed the band’s timely advice as a new White House administration threatens the rights of marginalized communities across the board. Get up, stay up, and battle on.
