UK punk collective Jools has announced their debut album, Violent Delights, set for release on June 6th via Hassle Records. The band has also shared the album’s lead single, “Mother Monica.”
Violent Delights presents a collection of raw and personal narratives, exploring themes of grief, rage, desire, and identity. The album delves into the complexities of addiction, religious upbringing, obsessive relationships, and sexual violence. Jools draw from lived experiences, delivering each story with unflinching honesty and emotional intensity through defiant anthems or poignant laments.
Of the track, lead vocalist Kate Price shares,
We’d spoken about the constant, underlying feeling of guilt and need to be ‘good’ that can sometimes come with being brought up Catholic. For us, that eventually manifested in a need to be rebellious. The hook of the chorus comes from a prayer by St Augustine, who was known for being excessive and sinful in his youth, and asked God to make him good, but just not yet. Mother Monica is our version of that prayer.
Recorded at The Ranch studio in Southampton across two sessions in August and December 2024, Violent Delights was produced and mixed by Lewis Johns. While rooted in post-punk, the album draws influences from metal, rap, post-hardcore, and hip-hop, creating a dynamic and genre-bending sound. Though the album explores heavy themes, Jools intends for it to be a celebration of confronting adversity. Violent Delights ultimately reflects a sense of closure and the anticipation of new beginnings.
