Shayan Regan hooks you in from the very first lines: “Stardust scattered on my shoes, Trading secrets with Neptune.” Immediately you are wondering where this record is going and what kind of journey it is about to take you on. The answer is that it takes you somewhere truly special, a musical and lyrical adventure that earns every second of your attention.
“Zero Hour: Genesis” opens with incredible lyrics, a smooth bass line, and synthesizers that set the tone immediately. The track lands somewhere between classic rock and psychedelic rock, wrapped in a modern production quality that gives it a fresh and alive feeling. The synth work here is genuinely experimental, with riffs and textures buzzing in the distance while the drums and bass hold everything together with steady confidence. It is a song that is sonically exciting from start to finish, rewarding you every time you lean in a little closer. The lyrics are where Shayan Regan really announces himself as a poet, and no line does that better than “I saw God in a meteor dive, She’s dead but she feels so alive.” That is the kind of writing that stops you in your tracks.
The next song is an absolute blast. “Spaceship L-U-V” pulls the listener straight back to retro rock n’ roll with a rockabilly tinge, a faster tempo, and the catchiest melody on the record so far. At just two minutes and twenty seconds it is over before you know it, and you will hit replay immediately, no question about it. This is the kind of song you listen to on a loop until you have every word memorized just so you can sing along at the top of your lungs. Lyrically it is about a love and hate relationship with a spaceship, two people flying around, flipping each other off, and somehow falling in love in the process. It is as fun and wild as it sounds and Shayan Regan pulls it off with total charm.
If you know David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” then the next track will hit you in a very specific way. Shayan Regan is asking a similar question on “Pink Mars” but from a completely different angle. Where Bowie wondered whether life on Mars exists at all, Shayan Regan already knows it does. And not only does it exist, it is better than what we have here on Earth. Martians are not consumed by iPhones or materialism or the endless noise of modern life. They have figured something out that we haven’t. It is a sharp and poetic piece of social commentary wrapped inside a stunning belted ballad that gives Shayan Regan the space to fully show off what his voice can do. He soars, he hits the high notes flawlessly, and he makes every second of it feel effortless. This is a vocal performance that demands to be heard.
Molly Coleman joins Shayan Regan on “You’re So Uninviting” and their vocals blend together seamlessly, lifting each other up and feeling like a warm blanket. This upbeat pop song celebrates the elated feeling of being in love with someone who is totally toxic and uninviting, a contradiction anyone who has fallen for the wrong person will recognize immediately. The vocal melody is catchy, the instrumentation is bright, and the chemistry between the two singers makes it one of the most purely fun moments on the record.
Ready for a funky moment? The bass line on “Callistoa’s Odyssey” hooks you immediately and from there the guitars come in dripping with confidence, echoing in sultry ways and grooving perfectly with the bass and drums who are completely locked in together. Shayan’s voice is soulful and smooth here, showcasing yet another side of his talent and his ability to move effortlessly across genres. Then the chorus hits and it is a full on catchy pop moment that you absolutely will not see coming after the laid back verses. It is a genuinely great surprise.
“Galactic” is a love song with 80s inspired guitar riffs and vocal harmonies that stop you dead in your tracks. The song sounds as huge as the love it is describing and you can feel it pouring out of every note. “My love’s cosmic when you’re near.” If you need a song to fall in love to, this is it. The love songs continue with “Our Burning Sun,” a soulful classic rock themed track that compares romantic love to a blazing sun, warm and all consuming and impossible to look away from. Then a colossal sounding track comes crashing in. “Galaxy of Delights” is a full throated profession of love, with Shayan Regan belting at the top of his lungs and sharing his dedication with everything he has. “We’re going out of this world tonight, I’m gonna give you everything you like.” It is as big and beautiful as it sounds.
The storyline progresses and we go back to an early rock n’ roll sound, with Shayan’s voice taking on a retro quality that fits the moment perfectly as he drifts into his falsetto. He is done talking. “I don’t want to talk, I know you’re waiting for my next move.” He knows his lover is waiting for him to stop being shy and just go for it, and so he gets straight to the point with “Let’s Take Our Clothes Off.” The guitar riffs bring the action to life in musical form while the overall feel of the song stays sweet and tender, a desire expressed with charm rather than urgency.
The record wraps up with two strong closers. “A World of Little Worlds” brings big sounds and big emotions, built on belted ballad vocals and a riffing bass that gives the song a real sense of weight and grandeur. Then “Lost and Found” comes in with its own riffing bass and synthesizers, introducing experimental autotune that is handled in a trippy and genuinely exciting way, feeling like a natural extension of the cosmic world Shayan Regan has been building throughout the record. He closes things out beautifully: “And if the cosmos allows, You’re lost, then found.” It is a perfect ending to a remarkable journey.
