Dublin trio DIVIL, comprising childhood friends Danny Dempsey McMahon, Jocelyn Vance, and Conor Cusack, have launched their musical journey with the release of their debut single, “Thanks A Million.” The track serves as the first taste of their forthcoming EP, DIVIL I, set for release on June 19th. The group’s origin story is as poignant as their sound; after falling out of touch for nearly a decade, the three reunited in the wake of Danny’s father’s funeral, only to face a second life-altering challenge shortly after when Conor was diagnosed with cancer. In the face of such profound loss and hardship, the childhood friends turned to songwriting as a vital lifeline, using music to process their grief and rebuild the bond they shared in their school days.

“Thanks A Million” stands as the group’s first collaborative effort, a song that captures the frustration of being stuck in a “self-inflicted” cycle. Drawing on the uniquely Irish tendency to use the titular phrase in almost any situation, the song acts as a wry, gentle observation of daily life while grappling with darker themes. Lyrically, the track centres on the saving grace of friendship, depicting a scene where friends check in on one another during the lowest moments of isolation.

Of the single, vocalist, Danny Dempsey McMahon describes,

“The song is about hope in the form of friendship. It’s about your friends checking in to see if you’re alright after you’ve been in a self-inflicted depression. I have this image of being stuck in a box bedroom suffering, the door opens with the lads checking that I’m ok. I respond, ‘I’ll be right here, thanks a million’.”
