Jenny Gillespie Mason has officially announced her forthcoming album, In the Safety of the Light, set for release on June 12th via Native Cat Recordings. The project marks a significant artistic pivot, signalling a profound return to the acoustic folk foundations that first defined Mason’s songwriting as a teenager. Produced by the acclaimed Noah Georgeson, known for his work with Joanna Newsom and Devendra Banhart, and recorded at a private studio in Los Angeles, the album serves as one of the most personal chapters of Mason’s career.
Alongside the album announcement, Mason has shared the project’s lead single, “Rungs of Love.” Of which she describes,
Rungs of Love was inspired by my guru Mother Mirra Alfassa’s descriptions of the rungs of love in a relationship – from selfish love that cares a lot about what you get back, to a love that gives without wanting anything back, to a divine love that serves only God. The song moves between the verses and the chorus from depicting a romantic human relationship, its successes and bumps, to meditating on the relationship I want to have with God.
After spending over a decade experimenting with psychedelic pop, jazz, and electronic textures through her project Sis, Mason has stripped her sound back to the acoustic guitar and Wurlitzer. Recorded live as an ensemble throughout 2024, the album explores the complexities of balancing a spiritual life with the realities of modern existence. Drawing from her experiences as a mother, a wife, and an aspiring yogi, Mason sought to keep the project’s communication straightforward and accessible. She notes that the record was building within her for years, but only reached its true essence after collaborating with Georgeson, whose calm and creative approach helped her embrace the simplicity of her original inspiration: just a songwriter and her guitar. By pulling lyrics directly from her personal journals without excessive adornment, Mason has crafted a collection that addresses the challenges of living as a spiritual seeker within a “weird civilisation.”
