Catch Them If You Can: Die Twice and Brooki Tear Up East London

On Friday, 8th May, the Irish Mascara Bar was livening up the streets of Clapton. It was the second show of Die Twice’s three-week residency, with each night featuring new special guests. Rockstar Nieve Ella ignited the stage last week, and this week’s surprise guest had to fly all the way from Ireland.

Brooki are a must-watch. With no released music yet, you’re forced to go and experience them in person—it’s essential. Lead singer Sarah’s vocal performance is always ground-shaking, and the emotional presence the band radiates on stage shows a passion that swiftly infects a crowd who simply can’t stand still. You can’t discount Brooki as just an opener; they are a headline-worthy performance in their own right.

After many a Guinness was poured and cigarettes rolled, Die Twice carefully strummed their guitars and slowly hit their cymbals. Their deep, moody rock is overflowing with craftsmanship. Their lyrics are complex, and Olly Bayton’s vocals are so well-controlled that he’s somewhat of a performance contortionist. Later, Brooki’s lead singer, Sarah, accompanied the band on stage to support vocally in a family affair I felt privileged to witness. Her silky vocals on their celebrated track “Paris” were a highlight of the evening, leaving the crowd screaming for an encore, which quickly ensued.

The evening was a celebration of rising talent; hungry and restless, yet confident and masterful. Both bands will soon be trophies of a Ticketmaster war, so I’d pin them down while you still can.
