Daydream Plus, the bright, melodic alter ego of acclaimed death metal veterans Tomb Mold, have announced their debut full-length album, Second Last Day of Summer, arriving July 10th via Run For Cover Records. Delivering an aurally opposite style to their main band’s crushing metal output, the project blends math rock, city pop, and ’90s emo instrumentals, spearheaded today by the vibrant, hyper-technical lead single “Speed Limit.”
Formed in 2020 by Tomb Mold’s Payson Power, Max Klebanoff, and Kevin Sia, Daydream Plus allows the trio to channel their complex musicianship into lush, breezy compositions inspired by jazz, city pop, and retro video game scores. Recorded by Darren McGill and mixed by Arthur Rizk, Second Last Day of Summer treats its instrumental tracks like expansive world-building exercises, utilising clever interludes that play out like digital cutscenes. The record also features an impressive cross-genre roster of guest contributors, including emo pioneer Steve Lamos (American Football), jazz saxophonist Joseph Shabason (Destroyer), and Ryo Kishimoto (Fox Capture Plan), all helping to capture the bittersweet, fleeting nostalgia of the waning summer months.
In a brilliant nod to their underlying gaming influences, the band has also collaborated with Batlab Electronics to build Extended Forecast, an alternative, completely counter-reimagined chiptune version of the entire album. The 8-bit rendition is being made available exclusively on a limited-edition, custom-designed cartridge that is fully functional with vintage Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) hardware. Seamlessly blending technical precision with a carefree, lighthearted spirit, the project proves to have legs far beyond its initial premise, offering an incredibly unique portal into a sun-drenched, nostalgic landscape.
