F.O. Machete Dream Of Teeth And Lemons On ‘Sleeper Cell’

Scottish outfit F.O. Machete have unveiled the exquisite alternative-rock-influenced track Sleeper Cell.

F.O. Machete – Sleeper Cell

Formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 2003, F.O. Machete is the creative duo of Natasha Noramly on bass and vocals alongside Paul Mellon on guitar and vocals. Refusing to be confined to a single style, the band draws influence from acts such as Sonic Youth, Pixies, and Pavement while shaping those inspirations into a sound entirely their own.

Throughout their career, F.O. Machete have built a strong reputation through headline tours, festival appearances both in the UK and overseas, and support slots alongside acclaimed acts such as TV on the Radio and Dinosaur Jr. The band eventually went on hiatus in 2011 when Natasha relocated to Los Angeles to join Bedtime for Toys, while Paul toured internationally with Red Light Company and collaborated with Human Don’t Be Angry and Bdy_Prts.

Discussing the inspiration behind the track, Natasha explained:

The track starts somewhere familiar, a dream about teeth falling out, before slipping sideways into something stranger: a sleeper agent mid-interrogation, with a drawer full of plastic lemons that are the torture devices and no clear explanation. The surreal logic is exactly the point of the song. I also have been thinking beneath the words and absurdity. The song plays like an awakening from years of haze and inertia, the sound of someone suddenly becoming conscious inside their own life again…”

And as surreal as all this sounds, the lyrics clearly mirror these abstract concepts, enhanced by its appealing instrumentation, guided by a dazzling guitar riff and hypnotic bass lines that are further emphasised by tightly pounding drums. Also worth praising is Natasha’s vocal work, which shifts from calm and sweet verses to a commanding delivery during the chorus, definitely reminiscent of classic bands like The Breeders and the previously mentioned Pixies.

“Like the catchiest fever dream imaginable, Sleeper Cell stands as a fabulous display of unbridled creativity, brought to life through a highly enjoyable performance.”

Sleeper Cell serves as the second preview of F.O. Machete’s forthcoming album, still untitled and scheduled for release this November. The record is currently being recorded and produced by Paul Savage at Chem19 Studios, known for work with The Delgados, Mogwai, The Twilight Sad, and Paolo Nutini, and based on the strength of this track alone, the wait for the album already feels difficult.
