Seattle’s Craetorus opens “Karma Kween” with a soulful organ that immediately sets a mood, and then the sultry bass and drums roll in locked together so tightly that it feels less like a song starting and more like a groove that has always existed and you just found it.
The track comes from their EP Veiled in Time, and it showcases the kind of real, organic musicianship that is increasingly rare, the kind that makes you close your eyes and just let it happen. Vocalist Darla Rae (they/them) delivers the lyrics with a sultry soulfulness that pulls you straight into the world Craetorus has built, a meditation on how we are drawn to repeat the same mistakes no matter how many times they burn us. At the 3:30 mark, the band’s trans drummer steps into the spotlight with a performance that genuinely stops you in your tracks, a reminder that this is a band full of serious players who have something to prove and the chops to prove it. Craetorus is trans, queer, and Filipino, and “Karma Kween” arriving during Pride Month feels less like timing and more like intention. This is a band you absolutely need to see live, but for now tune in to their EP:
