Caitlin Starr wants a certain special someone to acquiesce and become her Girlfriend. And the way she goes about asking her is to pen an agitated, explosive, cautiously-celebratory, queer-led, joyous noise.

Serving as both an ode to lesbian love and a trailblazing sonic assault, it sits stylistically somewhere between the sound of the modern grunge revival, classic alternative rock, and good-old-fashioned DIY punk. As romantic gestures go, it’s pretty damn impressive.
Thick, fuzzy guitars, frenetic, pounding drums and a bass that simply refuses to quit all provide a delicious backdrop for Caitlin’s lackadaisical vocal to lilt listlessly and lovingly over the top of. Melodically perfect and tonally distinct, it is reminiscent of a blend of Julian Casablancas and Kim Gordon, which I think you’ll find is the dictionary definition of “really f*cking cool”.
Anxious, coy and curious, the vocal delivery (and indeed the lyrical content) seems to represent the sometimes unnerving feelings that come with falling in love and falling hard. Conversely, the accompanying music video (which you can watch via her YouTube link below) feels somewhat antithetical to this underlying tone.
Throughout the song, Caitlin is unsure, self-conscious, doubtful and concerned. However, in the fantastically exciting and exquisitely realised music video (described by the artist label as “ essentially a lesbian rocker’s fever dream”), she is anything but – thoroughly enjoying the fruits of her romantic labour with reckless abandon and wanton joy. It’s an artistic juxtaposition that works wonders and feels a little bit like a cheat code, enabling you to see both sides of a coin at the same time.
An incredible single in its own right, Will u b My Girlfriend also serves as the opening track from Caitlin’s upcoming EP, Speed Saves.
