Slyrydes are back, and more punk than ever, with new single: ‘One Is Too Many’.
Slyrydes – One Is Too Many
Irish band Slyrydes confidently return with their new single: ‘One Is Too Many’.
Slyrydes, since their arrival on the post-punk scene in 2018, have been steadily gaining momentum. Quickly cementing themselves as up-and-coming in the alternative scene, and championed by the likes of Paul McCloone and Fontaines D.C, the band have proved that they are a spark to watch in Ireland’s new wave music explosion.
With their 2025 album, ‘What Happens if You Get Happy?’, the Galway quartet candidly explored mental health and its conflicting place in Ireland. Now set to release their second album, the band’s new single, ‘One Is Too Many’, has a more introspective tone. The picture feels smaller, more reflective, and while the band’s Irishness is unquestionable, it feels less like an address to the state of a nation and more like a direct address to ‘you’.
With ‘One Is Too Many’, the band leans into exploring the overwhelming presence of addiction, describing it as a ‘crutch’, daring the listener to imagine what might happen when that crutch is taken away as the lyrics spiral into the effects of addiction. The song confidently builds, a surging guitar-fuelled anthem that possesses the unmistakable sound of Darklands recording studio in Dublin. The studio is owned by Slyrydes member, Dan Doherty, who served as the architect for this latest single, with Eoin [Fuz] Reilly touching on the band’s ability to contribute to the song differently, creating:
“a cool way to convey the introspection that comes with recovery”.
The volatility of the single is also appealing, its repeated ‘one is too many, but ten is not enough’ emphasising the pendulum that addiction can be. Audibly, this unpredictability is also made clear, with expected head-banging rock contrasted by sharp spoken word. The vulnerability of addiction, but also speaking out about addiction, is highlighted at the song’s close and will leave the listener wanting another spin of the record.
“Grappling with addiction and cut with the customary Darklands grit, ‘One Is Too Many’ simmers with unapologetic punk, confirming Slyrydes as one to watch.”
