Taking a sharp left turn from the prior, more rootsy, atmospheric alt-country sound of her debut EP, South East London’s Kmoto returns with an indie/alt-rock leaning anthem that’s full of vim and vigour.
Kmoto – Save Your Slouch
Spirited and spritely, Save Your Slouch was created in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and producer Louis Takooree (Bleach Lab) and was mixed and mastered by Brett Shaw (Foals, Florence + The Machine, Daughter and more). This serious pedigree results in an accomplished sound that comes across as confident, well-rehearsed and perfectly polished – but, crucially, not overly so.
The guitars squeal and the drums pound and the bass throbs – it recalls classic 90s artists like Lush, Pixies, and Sleater-Kinney. The whole thing shimmers with shoegazey textures and rock’n ‘ roll attitude, but we definitely also detect subtle essences of the Americana sound that the artist has previously been synonymous with.
A rip-roaring, excellently executed slice of rock power, Save Your Slouch is anything but inept. A wall of noise that is both strong and striking, it is accomplished and impactful, and is a promising new line drawn in the sonic sand and will compel you to keep your eyes peeled on this creative chameleon.
We’re told that the song “came from that specific frustration of watching someone make excuses instead of moving forward, and realising you’re just as guilty of it”. That sense of exasperation comes leaking through throughout the tense, taut track, but it also feels like it’s being expelled. Like it’s a cleansing exercise in catharsis. I can’t wait to hear what comes next.
