Post-hardcore collective Self Defense Family have returned with “Reclusion,” their first new studio recording in six years. Released via Run For Cover Records, the track marks a thunderous comeback for the ever-evolving group led by frontman Patrick Kindlon (also of Drug Church).
Unfolding over two and a half minutes, “Reclusion” pairs churning guitar chords and heavy, driving drums with Kindlon’s distinctive, impassioned vocal delivery. Beyond a live album in 2023, the band has kept a low profile since their 2020 two-track release, making “Reclusion” a long-awaited piece of crashing catharsis for fans.
Reflecting on the track and hinting at a larger body of work currently in development, Kindlon shares:
“I’ve been trying to write lyrics about family and animals instead of songs about being atomized and thinking everyone is crazy. But it turns out even my love songs are about being atomized and thinking everyone is crazy. Call it a creative through line, I guess… I’ve got a family I love but everyone is dying on me. I’d like to have lyrics that do it all justice.”
Known for their revolving door of musical collaborators and a creative process that usually relies on immediate, off-the-cuff studio writing, Kindlon admits that this new batch of material has challenged his usual philosophy:
“We recorded last year, but I’ve been holding up the process. Typically I go into the studio and write while I record, and it’s only ever about conveying a moment. But this time I’m struggling with the idea of getting things ‘perfect.’ A silly idea. But some of these songs are about things I want to get right the first time.”
In tandem with the new single, Self Defense Family are making a rare return to the stage this summer. The group is set to play a select run of US shows across July and August alongside Fiddlehead and Ink & Dagger.
