You might remember the old band, 30 Seconds to Mars, known for their commercially underwhelming sound and shady lead vocalist, Jared Leto. Leto’s career is marked by unremarkable cinematic performances in a handful of movies over the years, whispers of alleged abusive behavior, and more recently, several women coming forward to tell their stories about this 54-year-old scum bag.
The recent release of the BBC Documentary, Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret, includes ten women recounting their alleged abuse at the hands of the Morbius lead star and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman
Some of the accusations detail instances where Leto assaulted a 17-year-old child in a motel bathroom, threatened a 19-year-old with assault, statutory raped a minor in California knowingly disregarding the age issue, and include a history of sexually explicit and unwelcome phone calls to women and children as young as 16.
The documentary alleges that these instances happened over the course of fourteen years, from 2002 to 2016. During those fourteen years, the number of allegations far outpaced the number of albums released by 30 Seconds to Mars (three album releases, but 0 if we’re being honest about how many were worth a damn).
Between the eyeroll-worthy stage peacocking to compensate for his sharp downturn in whatever vocal performance range he’d once had and the unsurprising history of his “need” to go method while acting in films like Suicide Squad, the allegations Leto faces alongside patterns of abuse seem only to scratch an obvious surface; Leto’s shine is not one of glitz and glamour, but rather it is the glistening of a pig under the all-seeing sun of truth coming to light.
The only thing worse to come out of his mouth since any of his music or insane tirades against co-stars is hands down his denial of these alleged perverse and criminal predatory acts. If only Leto could finally deny his ability to be worth the cult personality he’s engineered to protect himself from his reality — he’s a slimy, washed-up has-been with likely more objective guilt than there ever was talent.
To the women, former employees of Leto/his band, and the many crew who helped tell their stories, we thank you for your bravery and resilience and wish you safety and peace moving forward.
To the defenders of Leto doing mental gymnastics to protect a man they don’t know who wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about them, please consider losing your blind and foolish loyalty as severely as Leto has lost major movie studios over a billion dollars in the last year. Being a piece of shit has a cost, and you do not need to pick up the tab for a man who can afford anything but his own restraint.
Oh, and Jared Leto has quickly denied these claims. Shocker.
Sure, Jared.
Jared and “alleged” abusers like him need reminding of some pretty simple truths, as do many unfortunate loyalists and superfans without critical thinking abilities in the face of sexual violence conversations. No music, no movie, no creative project is worth engaging with at the cost of ignoring credible accusations from survivors who have no doubt been irrevocably harmed because some loser couldn’t resist harming little girls and young women.
For what it’s worth, I used to be a 30 Seconds to Mars fan when I was 14. Perhaps Leto would’ve liked me better back then, too.
