Critically acclaimed alt-indie pop artist Rachel Chinouriri has announced her highly anticipated second studio album, I think I spoke too soon, arriving Friday, October 16th via Parlophone / Atlas Artists. Alongside the announcement, she has shared the record’s lead single, “One song away from crying,” accompanied by a surreal, dreamlike music video directed by Dora Paphides.
A glossy, synth-pop track beamed straight from the dancefloor in a moment of insecurity, “One song away from crying” captures the relatable friction of soldiering on through a night out while on the verge of breakdown. Speaking on the single’s deeper themes, Chinouriri explains:
‘One song away from crying’ is about the precipice of a night out where you know you need to leave and have to make a decision. It’s a deeper decision because it’s less about the night itself but more about a reflection of a deeper internal conflict with your self-value that you haven’t looked at yet.
Picking up where her standout 2024 debut What A Devastating Turn of Events left off, I think I spoke too soon represents a bold evolution of Chinouriri’s sound. Written and recorded across London, Hereford, and Los Angeles, the record features collaborations with longstanding creative partners (APOB, Mary Weitz, Glen Roberts, Daniel Hylton-Nuamah) alongside new collaborators, including Lucy Dacus and Eli Teplin.
Thematically structured around the lens of a single, pivotal night out, the album acts as a vivid interrogation of self-worth, growth, and personal evolution. Reflecting on the heart of the project, Chinouriri shares:
My core thing is you can change who you are at any moment and you can forgive yourself at any moment. And I think forgiving yourself is the first step in becoming a better person.
