London-born, Paris-based singer-songwriter Flora Hibberd has released her latest single, “Silent Movie Baby,” offering a further preview of her upcoming sophomore album, Mammoth, set for release on 16th October via 22TWENTY.
Serving as the album’s opening track, “Silent Movie Baby” sets the narrative arc for the record, merging bouncing electronic lines and distorted vocals as Hibberd confronts themes of internal upheaval and unwanted desire. Accompanied by a found-footage, lo-res music video directed by bandmate Victor Claas, the single captures a distinctly unsettling mood designed to reflect the track’s central emotional conflict.
Reflecting on the single and the forces behind it, Hibberd shared:
“The song explores the feeling of trying to escape the structure and then ending up using the structure against itself, to destroy it. Sudden, big, unhelpful desire crashes into your life and changes everything for a few weeks.”
Adding context to the visual direction, Claas explained:
“We wanted something slightly unsettling for this one – think of fast-moving, cold-blooded animals creeping around at dusk, or colonies of insects swarming over a jar of jam. No matter how hard you try to sink your desires, they will resurface eventually.”
Following recent live appearances supporting Hannah Cohen and Beirut, as well as two sets at The Great Escape, Hibberd will perform at Berlin’s PEOPLE Festival before embarking on a UK headline tour this November, featuring a date at London’s Courtyard Theatre on November 12th.
