East London five-piece Humane have released their clinical, propulsive new single, “Penny Let Go,” marking the latest step in the band’s evolution toward a darker, more expansive sound.
Driven by an infectious, escalating hook and frontman Max Hanley’s punchy vocal delivery, the track revels in themes of ambiguity, tension, and surrender. Written in under an hour following an initial spark of inspiration on the way to the studio, “Penny Let Go” arrives alongside an official music video, following hot on the heels of their previous 10k Project collaboration “Kill Time.”
Expanding on the open-ended nature of the song’s hook, Hanley explained:
“The hook to this song came to me whilst driving to the studio, and we had written most of the song within the hour. It was quick so I wasn’t thinking about what it meant, but I enjoy the hook’s ambiguity. It could be about money or a girl, but in my head it’s more of a statement about ego death and a surrender, an instruction to let go when you’re not sure what it is you’re holding onto.”
Having originated as a solo project in East London before expanding into a dynamic live quintet, Humane have steadily built momentum across two self-released EPs, slots at Green Man and SXSW Sydney, and radio backing from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Apple Music 1, and Radio X.
The new single marks the beginning of an ambitious new chapter for the band, who are set to support Sex Mask across the UK and Europe before reuniting with Australian indie rockers Radio Free Alice for the European leg of their upcoming tour.
