British-Finnish songwriter and producer otta has unveiled her new single, “BOWIE,” out today via her imprint löyly. Serving as the second preview of her upcoming album ASTRA, due out 20th November, the track offers a pared-back contrast to the sprawling, eight-minute lead single “MEZZANINE.”
Whittled down to raw vocals and guitar with light digital augmentation, “BOWIE” shifts away from the dense, musique concrète sonic collages that defined her earlier EPs and 2025’s With Love From Everywhere. Drawing inspiration from direct, classic songwriting, the track centres on themes of vulnerability and finding emotional clarity within life’s fragmented moments.
Opening up about the shift toward a more understated sound, otta shared:
“The idea of making more stripped back music scares me, and this is a cute moment of the album, I like the perspective in it. I was listening to so much Wings and Paul McCartney at the time and think it reminded me how much I love just songwriting and being direct. I wouldn’t have immediately picked this as a single but feedback from friends was that it would be good one, so I kind of just wanted to see.”
While otta’s previous works featured collaborations with artists like Warp Records producer kwes. and black midi percussionist Morgan Simpson, ASTRA marks her most self-sufficient release to date, with every instrument performed entirely by otta herself and mixing handled by Dilip Harris (King Krule, Little Dragon).
The single arrives alongside a video co-shot by otta, Theo Zhykharyev, and Ciara Reddy. “BOWIE” is streaming now across all major platforms, with ASTRA available to pre-order ahead of its November release.
