Starting his music career with a blonde wig, a floor lamp, and a piano, Deon Chevaliere evolved his sound into a chameleonic, genre-bending blend, formatively inspired by S Club 7’s ‘Sunshine’ and Bob Dylan.
His new single ‘BOOMER’ opens with an immediate beat that gets the foot tapping before there’s time to settle in. From the first few seconds, it signals that it’s a song worth boogieing to, one that isn’t interested in a slow build, with laser gun-style sound effects immediately punctuating the soundscape, piquing interest and drawing the listener in with a playful, sci-fi edge.
Just when the arrangement seems settled, it shifts gears: distorted vocals sit atop layered synths giving the song 90s vibes, most notably in the bridge with its layered ‘ahh’ harmonies. It’s pop enough to stay familiar, with a hook (‘boom boom boom’) that sticks instantly, but the backing keeps finding small ways to surprise with each listen.
The end synth bells are reminiscent of falling stars, creating a sense of being in space, a feeling further amplified by the rest of the production. The ending is a standout choice on its own: the sound moves from right to left to center before cutting out, and the final beat drop lands with real impact, one that felt particularly vivid when heard in flight as the plane was taking off.
Chevaliere has described the record’s origin as a fever dream involving a cat named Behemoth, a chalice made of bone, and the band’s devil teaching him the track’s title. Whether or not that is taken literally, it tracks:
‘BOOMER’ has an unhinged, slightly possessed energy that matches its bizarre origin. It’s catchy, strange, and confident in its own weirdness, a single that rewards a close listen as much as a casual one, thanks to the detail packed into the track.
