Auckland quintet Awning have signed to independent label Winspear (Slow Pulp, Wishy, Swapmeet) and marked the announcement with the release of their new single, “Little Green Book.” The track arrives alongside an official music video directed by bassist Damin McCabe.
Led by prominent visual artist Christian Dimick alongside drummer Riley Noonan, bassist Damin McCabe, and guitarists Ethan Broughtan and Eli Chamberlain, Awning have rapidly built a reputation across New Zealand’s live circuit following opening slots for Wednesday and an appearance at Auckland’s Going Global Festival.
Recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios and produced by De Sevens (Womb, Office Dog), “Little Green Book” channels an austere, industrial-tinged post-punk sound reminiscent of Protomartyr and Preoccupations. Built around tension, release, and Dimick’s intense vocal delivery, the track uses cryptic imagery to process the weight of personal loss.
Unpacking the lyrical obscurity and emotional themes behind the release, Dimick explained:
“This song is about grief, gritty stuff that feels almost too much to put into song format. This is why all the lyrical imagery is open, cryptic and layered up. When things feel too personal lyrically, I like to create a little distance between the listener and myself. The lyrical obscurity allows me some privacy but also opens the song’s meaning up, allowing someone to insert their own meaning.”
He continued regarding the raw core of the track:
“In saying that, there are some pretty on-the-nose lyrics as well. ‘I want to remember what you said’ and ‘Grief is a corner…’ I mean, you get the gist. We carry people’s words around for them after they are gone.”
“Little Green Book” is available to stream globally now across all digital platforms via Winspear.
