Kicking off his impressive singing debut with Sink With Me, Billy Stuart debuts his five-song solo EP that blends alternative, indie rock, melodic emo, and punk. Along with compelling songwriting that tells a vulnerable and powerful series of stories, Billy Stuart’s singer-songwriter debut starts on a strong note, namely with the title track, “Sink With Me.”
For the fans of anything from AFI and 2000’s punk-acoustic edge to the songwriting and stylings of Dashboard Confessional, Billy Stuart’s ability to engage in an emotionally rich sound centered around acoustic guitar creates an intimate story of painful separation in light of a heavy personal reflection of worthiness and necessity of sacrifice to protect someone you love from yourself.

Throughout the EP, you get a blend of more than just acoustic strumming dictating the heartfelt rhythm. The clean electric guitar, piano, bass, drums, and strings all work together to create a rich texture of sound. The lightning touch of electric guitar in the “Sink With Me” bridge that nods to Billy Stuart’s more distorted, heavier roots adds dimension to his personal style and further illuminates the road he’s taken to get to the Sink With Me EP.
“I feel like a lot of my inspiration came from acoustic solo artists that I love like Rocky Votolato and Dashboard Confessional, but also drawing inspiration from my punk roots with bands like AFI and Love Equals Death, as well as all the grunge/rock bands of the 90’s with their acoustic ballads.”
Recorded in Sacramento between January and March 2026, Billy Stuart took time to craft a voice entirely his own for his debut EP. That said, the vocals came after the songwriting, meeting the influences and originality where they first began. As a musician with strong roots in hardcore punk, the instrumentals keep their personal signature while shimmering with the influence of the bands that shaped several waves and sub-genres under the alt and emo umbrella.
“I wrote all of the music to these songs first, and I considered getting a vocalist to sing them, but I felt that if I wanted to keep these songs and lyrics as authentic feeling as possible, I should sing myself. Which was incredibly terrifying because I never sang before on anything (other than some screaming/yelling in my old hardcore punk band). I will say that working with my producer/audio engineer Michael Cox was what really helped because he made me feel comfortable to be able to sing in front of him and find my voice.”
Billy draws from alternative, singer-songwriter, and indie-folk influences for sure, but I really got a sense of his rich and unique voice on songs like “Swan Dive.” The instrumentals for “Reprieve” strike as a hauntingly gorgeous moment where his instrumental composition and emotional movements carry you through the first half of the record into the next track, “Swan Dive,” a nostalgic and bittersweet existential moment on the EP.
Like a steady and sure thread through the jacket that held you in the colder months, the connections of themes like loss, uncertainty, guilt, memory, acceptance, and moving forward are ever present on Sink With Me in both lyric and musical finesse.
