Truthpaste have arrived with the release of their debut EP, I Don’t Know Either, out now via Dirty Hit and Memorials Of Distinction. Formed in Manchester in 2022 and now firmly embedded in London’s vibrant live circuit, the five-piece, aided by their signature “trusty computer drum”, have quickly built a reputation for a sound that defies simple categorisation. By seamlessly blending pop, acoustic folk, and electronic textures, Truthpaste has already earned widespread critical praise.
The new EP serves as a high-energy calling card, successfully capturing the band’s penchant for genre-hopping and collaborative songwriting. While earlier tracks leaned into violin-driven folk, I Don’t Know Either features bold stylistic pivots, with songs like “Bus Song” and the new single “Never Gonna Give” shifting toward driving electric guitars and synthesisers to better reflect the band’s kinetic live performances. Meanwhile, tracks such as “Swill To The Swine” and “Friendship Is The Truth” maintain the communal spirit that has become their hallmark, utilising group vocals and powerful arrangements to ground their evolving sound.
To celebrate the release, the band has shared the music video for “Never Gonna Give.” Reflecting on the track’s evolution, Esme explains:
“I wrote Never Gonna Give in my bedroom post lockdown, it was originally in a very strange key and much more sinister. Theo saw me singing it alone at a venue in Manchester called Fuel many moons ago and he deemed it Truthpaste worthy. It’s been through a lot of iterations, but we injected the signature Truthpaste fun and it became this big epic song.”
Looking ahead, the band noted: “In 4 songs it’s tricky, but hopefully the EP goes some way to representing the many aspects of Truthpaste so far and prepares people for our live show a bit better – we have fun, we dance and we do a bit of folk but we also rock out.” Fans can catch that energy in person next week as the band embarks on a UK headline tour, which includes a highly anticipated date at The Lexington in London.
