Releasing their second official single, South Korean duo The Expo explore the complexities of giving and receiving love in the deeply emotional rock track, This Time.
The Expo – This Time
Hailing from the musically rich nation of South Korea, The Expo is a rising duo formed by Kim Seonghun (vocals) and Lee Yuha (guitar, songwriting, production). One of the most interesting aspects of their project is their approach to genre. Rather than confining themselves to a particular style or following mainstream conventions, The Expo draw inspiration from the timeless sounds of the mid-to-late 20th century, particularly the musical vocabulary of the 60s through the 80s. However, they reinterpret those influences through a contemporary lens, giving their music a distinctive character.
Following the release of their debut single Eclipse this past May, which has surpassed 10,000 views since its launch, The Expo continue their musical development with This Time. The meaningful and emotive track explores the delicate balance between giving and receiving love, while also touching on emotional distance, missed opportunities, and the hope of making things right before it is too late.
Built around soothing piano and delicate guitar, This Time opens with a strong sense of tranquility, evoking the peaceful atmosphere of early dawn as the first rays of sunlight quietly filter through a window. Kim’s dreamy vocals further enhance this intimate mood, giving the opening a soft quality. However, the track gradually shifts gears around the halfway point, becoming more energized through intensified synths and more pronounced backing vocals. At the same time, Kim moves into a more emotionally charged vocal delivery, adding greater momentum to this composition.
This Time is a well-produced and thoughtfully performed composition, shifting between a classic sound and The Expo’s own contemporary approach. It is a piece that manages to establish its own identity while giving listeners a clear idea of what this South Korean duo can offer.
Considering this is only their second release, The Expo have already demonstrated plenty of promise, giving listeners plenty of reasons to look forward to what comes next. With that in mind, it will be exciting to see how The Expo continue to develop their sound and surprise us with their next release.
