Albuquerque’s own Dymer delivers a gut-wrenching heartbreak anthem with their new track, “Prosthetic.” While the music boasts an infectious, upbeat energy, thanks in large part to a captivating surf-rock guitar performance, the lyrics paint a different picture. This is truly one of the best songs Rock the Pigeon has received in a while and we are so excited to bring it to your attention.
“I’ve been writing songs for a few years now, and usually have a bank of lyrics that all generally fit into a similar theme just sitting in disjointed memos and notes that I find ways to combine with melodies and chord progressions when the time comes to construct them with a band. For this song, it just felt like it all came at once, and that has happened a couple times in the past, but this one felt special to me and I knew I just had to get it out of my system.” – Jonny Mouchet, Dymer
“Prosthetic” masterfully explores the devastating impact of a breakup, comparing it to the profound loss of a limb. This powerful analogy perfectly captures the feeling of losing a crucial part of yourself, a sense of incompleteness that lingers long after the initial pain subsides.
The song opens with a driving rhythm section, immediately establishing a sense of urgency and restlessness. The surf-rock guitar weaves its way through the arrangement, creating a vibrant and infectious melody that’s undeniably catchy. However, this upbeat musical backdrop serves as a brilliant contrast to the raw emotion in vocalist Dymer’s delivery.
“The lyrical inspiration comes from the feeling of losing an intimate relationship in your life, and struggling to open yourself up to that vulnerability again. I was divorced in 2023, and many people have described that feeling as losing a part of yourself, or severing a limb. I wanted to capture certain moments of realization and how it might look to open up that part of myself again to another person, who might have been coming from a similar place of caution and reluctance. The idea of a prosthetic limb made sense to me and seemed like an appropriate analogy.” – Jonny Mouchet, Dymer
The lead vocals, filled with both pain and a defiant spirit, convey the profound sense of loss and the struggle to move on post-breakup. The lyrics are deeply personal and relatable, capturing the universal experience of heartbreak with unflinching honesty. The hook lyric, “if your love is just a phantom limb, I could be prosthetic for you darling, and I may never feel like the real thing, but I want to see you reach for something” vividly illustrates the lingering presence of the lost love, even as the individual attempts to rebuild their life. In the vocals, listeners may also notice a sense of gratitude for the relationship even as it fades, especially as he sings, “I’m here to hold this space between.”
“Musically I wanted to just write something light and immediately catchy. I also had been listening to a few bands that incorporated 3 guitar parts and wanted to try that as well, so the track ended up with an acoustic part and 2 electrics that both play a lot of melodic content.” – Jonny Mouchet, Dymer
