Album Review – Beach Party by Stage Door Guy

Eclectic post-punk duo, Stage Door Guy, return with their third album Beach Party! It’s a genre-bending 10-track album that is a bundle of madness from start to finish, so get your dancing shoes on!

Over a decade ago, Brody, a spoken word poet, and Adam a regular performer at Manchester’s famous Speakeasy nights, joined together to form Stage Door Guy.

Despite being based in South East London, the group were originally from the UK’s indie-capital, Manchester and formed overseas in New Orleans, the city that’s notorious for its vibrant music scene. The combination of these elements plays a huge role in shaping their musical identity as they fuse New Orleans’ guitar licks and West African lilts with Mancunian beat poetry and classic doo wop street rhymes.

The album is a whirlwind of colour and excitement with band members inviting the listeners along to their out-of-this-world party. The opening track, ‘I’m Dancing’ kicks the album off perfectly, with the horns, snare and bass drum transporting you straight to a hot and sweaty New Orleans club, compelling you to move.

The energy is then switched immediately as the following track, Bullyboy, has a noticeably darker tone. The duo said, “The album was born in a world gone mad,” they explained that the songs with this darker tone aim to describe the human experience in an increasingly malfunctioning dystopian world.

With the album constantly changing genres, it takes the listener on an intense but intriguing musical journey.

The band have been influenced by an abundance of different artists, adding their best components to create a unique sound. With the vocals of The Streets’ Mike Skinner, the no-nonsense ethos of the Ramones and the sheer madness of Hasil Adkins.

The new album is wonderfully chaotic packed with a plethora of musical elements to create a well-rounded and enjoyable listen – so be sure to check it out!
