Steven Keene Remakes Woody Guthrie’s Popular Song Into “This World Is Your World”

Steven Keene has produced a classic song with a message that still resonates deeply on people across the globe. Everybody needs to hear the message in this song right now. Steven Keene took the classic 1940 Woody Guthrie song “This Land Is Your Land” and changed some of the lyrics in efforts to modernize it, turning it from “This Land Is Your Land” into “This World Is Your World.”

The original Woody Guthrie song was written in response to Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” that plays over and over again. Guthrie wanted to send a message to the nationalists and fascists and denounce their message, so he penned “This Land Is Your Land” in response. The song still resonates deeply today. It has been covered by hundreds, if not thousands, of artists in the past almost 100 years. This version is special because Steven Keene had the blessing of the Guthrie estate to publish his work, with Woody being a co-writer on the track. The song remains a folk ballad, driven by a warm acoustic guitar, and is made complete with a gorgeous harmonica solo.

“As one of the first, if not the first true Americana protest song, “This Land Is Your Land” has really become not just a landmark folk song for America, but a folk song for the world. It’s a song that has significance everywhere, in every country, on every continent. Woody wrote one of those perfect songs that just will resonate forever. But the world is more of a powder keg now than it’s ever been. Very scary times. So that kind of music is super important in this global moment for facilitating inspiring people towards a unified movement against war.” – Steven Keene
